Environmental responsibility

TAROM environment policy
The Romanian National Air Transport Company TAROM S.A. understands that climate change is real and requires immediate action.

Given the climate challenges facing society today, we believe it is our responsibility to accelerate our energy transition and contribute to the transformation efforts towards sustainable aviation.

We embrace the goal adopted by the international community that the world should go green by mid-century. We are working hard and committing resources to reach an ambitious target of zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

To achieve these targets, our strategy is divided into three main strands:
Fleet renewal
The gradual replacement of aircraft in our fleet with cleaner and more fuel-efficient new generation models is one of our key measures. This has resulted in the withdrawal from operation of ATR42-500 aircraft over 20 years old and their replacement by new generation ATR72-600 aircraft, the most fuel efficient regional aircraft. The renewal of the B737 fleet is currently underway with the introduction of the more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly B737-MAX aircraft. On average, we expect a reduction of at least 15% in fuel consumption, and thus CO2 emissions, through the introduction of new generation aircraft.
Use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is also one of the most promising levers that will help us reduce our CO₂ emissions, with the greatest impact for CO₂ reduction. Thus, the percentage of SAF included in aviation fuel, should be a minimum of 2% from 2025, rising to 6% in 2030, 32% in 2040 and finally 63% in 2050.
Fuel efficiency
Fuel efficiency can be achieved both in flight by optimising the flight plan and on the ground by optimising taxi time and using a single engine, using ground electrical power supplies (GPU) to operate on-board systems while stationary. In addition to the three directions mentioned above, TAROM reinforces its commitment through complementary actions such as the use on board our aircraft of exclusively recyclable packaging. We are also taking steps to limit waste generation and increase the amount of waste recycled. By integrating sustainable development into our activities and operations, we strive to support the Sustainable Development Goals (as defined by the United Nations) that fall within our scope of activity.

The challenges of the impact of aviation on the environment are closely related to the quality of life and sustainable development necessary for securing a clean environment for the future generations.
